0 New Satellite Images of The Oil Spill at Gulf of Mexico
On April 20,2010 an explosion occured on the semi-submersible offshore drilling rig Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico. On April 24, it was found that the wellhead was damaged and was leaking oil into the Gulf. The pollution from the Deepwater Horizon, oil spill is very rapidly spreading from the Gulf of Mexico to the neighbouring shorelines of the southeastern United States.
Around 2-4 days after the explosion, the rig sank to the ocean floor, and a pipe connected to the well on the sea floor broke. Oil began leaking from the Pipe.
It is estimated that around 6 million gallon of oil have leaked into the Gulf of Mexico within a month from the explosion in the Deepwater Horizon. This spreading of oil is a very serious treat to the Wildlife, affecting as many as 400 speacies along the coastal areas of Lousiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida.
It is said by the scientists that, the oil has reached currents that could carry the pollution to Florida and also to the east coast. Beside this due to the underwater oil plumes, There may be and amount of oil beneath the oceans surface, of the same amound we can see the the top layer of the Gulf.
Here are some pictures form Google and NASA of the spill on periodically taken.
The lower two images were captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Terra satellite. The fist shows a wider shot of the oil slick spreading on the Louisiana coast, while the other one shows a very closer look.
